Turning a Hobby Into a Career

What happens when you make your weekend recreation your job?

Disclaimer: This post may sound like one giant #humblebrag. That’s not my intention nor is a big ego within my character. My intent is to start a conversation on the topic of turning hobbies into a career.

Since I announced I was leaving PlayHaven, I’ve been approached by several people. I’m incredibly grateful for the support and opportunities presented by many friends and followers. It’s been overwhelming.

Blogging has been incredibly lucrative for me these past nine months. I started writing for fun and as a vehicle to learn. In turn, I’ve generated a lot of attention, reaching the front page of Hacker News and Medium several times and guest posting on popular publications like PandoDaily, Fast Company, and Thought Catalog. It also led me to create Startup Edition, a weekly email newsletter of entrepreneurs sharing their startup wisdom. It wasn’t my intention to market myself and create a “brand” but in doing so, several people have reached out to offer a role in marketing and writing.

And this scares me. These opportunities excite me but do I really want to be a marketer? I’ve always defined myself as a product guy. Product is my strength and passion but I’ve also exemplified interest and skills in marketing, content creation, and community-building in my hobbies.

If I turn my hobbies into my career, will I lose interest in writing? If I move into marketing, can I return to a product role?

I recently spoke with someone unhappy in their job.

“What do you want to do?” I asked.

“To be honest, I’m not sure.” She responded.

“Well, what do you do on the weekends?”

And perhaps subconsciously, I was asking myself the same question.
